Runners are also at risk for hip pain, often developing stress fractures which can be catastrophic if not attended to immediately.

Hip arthritis is another common cause of pain. It usually begins as groin pain and may gradually take away a person’s ability to walk. Other hip conditions include labral tears and loose bodies in the hip, which may cause mechanical symptoms, and bursitis, which develops on the outer aspect of the hip either from repetitive stress or from tendonitis in the hip.

  • Groin pain
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Clicking and catching

Knee Pain

Knee problems are the most common reasons for visiting an orthopaedic surgeon. The knee joint is complex and can be injured through overuse, trauma or even with a simple twisting movement.

Common knee problems include meniscus tears, which are tears in knee cartilage that usually arise from trauma or twisting. Arthritis is also very common and can be the result overuse or a knee injury at a young age. Patients with arthritis often need a knee replacement as a part of their treatment.

Sports related knee injuries include patellar instability, which may weaken an athlete to the point where he or she can’t compete. Another common sports injury, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears may debilitate the affected athlete. Often the ACL needs to be surgically reconstructed for a patient to return to competition. The variety of ACL reconstruction options include allograft, patellar tendon autograft and hamstring autograft.

Knee Symptoms Include:

  • Swelling
  • Instability
  • Clicking
  • Catching
  • Pain
  • Deformity

  • Giving way
