At The Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic, we focus on providing the most appropriate and minimally invasive surgical procedures in order to minimize our patients’ recovery time. Most surgeries we perform are done on an outpatient basis, meaning that the patient may return home the same day.
Our Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeons continually educate themselves on the latest surgical procedures and techniques. A team of experienced physical and occupational therapists and home health care specialists are also available to help you return to your daily routine as soon as possible.
We want your experience with The Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic to be as pleasant and rewarding as possible. To help you prepare for your upcoming surgery, please read the information below.
Before Orthopaedic Surgery
Our surgeon will perform the appropriate paperwork on your behalf in preparation for the surgery. During this time, it is important for you to provide a full list of all the medications you are currently taking. Our surgeon will thoroughly explain all of the pertinent details to help you prepare for your upcoming surgery.
Most inpatient surgeries and some outpatient procedures require an anesthesiologist to evaluate you at the hospital prior to your surgery. Whether on the day of surgery or during your anesthesia evaluation, please bring to the hospital:
- A list of your medications, over-the-counter drugs and vitamins
- A list of your allergies
- Your insurance card
- A list of any previous surgeries
A unique hospital I.D. band will be given to you. Many operating rooms will let you keep glasses or a hearing aid, so make sure to tell the nurse if you need them.
Day of Surgery
You will be given important instructions prior to your surgery that you will need to understand and follow. These instructions will be reviewed with you by your pre-operative nurse. Below are some examples of instructions you may be given prior to surgery:
- Please do not eat or drink anything the day of surgery. This includes water, ice, or chewing gum. After midnight the night before, do not eat or drink anything.
- Do not drink alcohol or smoke the night before your surgery.
- Wear comfortable clothing, no make-up, and no jewelry.
- Please make arrangements to have someone drive you home following surgery.
- Following surgery, you will need someone with you at home for at least 24 hours.
After Surgery
After surgery, your prescription medications can be obtained at the hospital outpatient pharmacy or through your personal pharmacy. Your Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic physician will arrange a post operative treatment plan to continue your recovery. You will receive written instructions to follow and may have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon within the next week. To ensure the best possible outcome, a team of experienced physical and occupational therapists as well as home health care specialists are available to help you return to your daily routine as soon as possible.
