What is a Total Joint Replacement?
During total joint replacement, an arthritic or damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. Most patients who choose to have a total joint replacement benefit from an improved quality of life through greater independence and healthier, pain-free mobility.
New technology allows for minimally invasive techniques for hip (including the Direct Anterior Approach) and knee replacement. Your surgeon will discuss these options with you. Non-surgical treatments are always utilized first; surgery is the last resort, but is often required. At The Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic, our surgeons are experienced in the newest treatments and will work with you personally to come up with a plan that best fits your individual goals.
Most Patients Decide to Have a Total Joint Replacement (Hip or Knee) When:
- The pain causes difficulty sleeping
- The pain makes daily activities difficult
- Patients are unable to continue favorite hobbies due to stiffness or weakness
- Arthritis limits the ability to carry on a normal life
Hip Replacement Candidates Usually Have Joint Deterioration Due to the Following:
- Osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Post traumatic arthritis (from injury)
- Avascular necrosis (from the loss of blood flow to the hip)
- Congenital hip deformities that result in early degeneration
Knee Replacement Candidates Usually Have Joint Deterioration Due to the Following:
- Osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Post traumatic arthritis (from injury)
- Previous cartilage injury
- Osteochondritis dissecans (from loss of blood flow to a region of the knee)
- Congenital knee deformities causing early degeneration
What is a Partial Knee Replacement?
A partial knee replacement is a smaller implant that is used to treat very localized arthritis on the inside of the knee. Patients who have more advanced arthritis involving other parts of the knee are not good candidates for this surgery. Patients who undergo a partial knee replacement benefit due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, experiencing a quicker recovery time and enjoying more normal knee function.
